Counterchange smocking, you don't have to gather it first, you just pick up according to the pattern. Not as stretchy as traditional gathered smocking.

Your pleated fabric samples and smocking are just beautiful. My mom used to make smocked dresses for me when I was little, but I never learned to do it, myself… I do have a wonderfully illustrated book on the subject I bought several years ago, EVERY KIND OF SMOCKING, by Kit Pyman. I’m going to have to try it.
